Reinhard John Ausderau left his home in Lachen,Schwyz, Switzerland, to travel to Antwerp, Belgium, via the railway, after the threat of the last snowfalls of winter had passed. A suitcase in one hand and a steerage class ticket in the other, he boarded the Red Star Lines' mail ship, the SS Pennland captained by Reid Heyer. Originally built by the Cunard Line and called the Algeria, she had settled into a more egalitarian service, with all passengers being steerage. Pushing away from dock on 28 May 1884, the 23 day journey was uneventful and on 20 June 1884, they sailed into New York Harbor and docked at Castle Garden in New York City. Immigrants could bypass the need for a sponsor, if they came with a needed occupation which is what Reinhard claimed, saying he was a Brillmaker which in Europe was either an eyeglass / telescope maker or a cask / basket maker---neither of which he knew anything about. Traveling with him, but destined to split up in New York City were possible relatives from his mother's side, Elise and Rudolf Muller and family and Rudolph? Sunher-Suhner To further welcome Reinhard and roll out the red carpet for him, New York experienced an extremely rare 5.5 earthquake in August, only to encourage him to leave the city and move further out into the country. You can take the boy out of the country, but one little earthquake will send him running right back to it. (cont.)
