The unit formed in March 1780 from various detachments of French and many foreign volunteers in the French army and navy. General Rochambeau, arrived in Newport, R.I. on 11 Jul 1780 with 5,300 with troops including the Lauzun's Legion. Some of the Legion traveled overland through nine states to Virginia. A contingent also sailed directly to Virginia.
