Mrs. Mildred Kathleen Thornton, age 85, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Wednesday evening, January 20, 2010 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Fernandina, she was the daughter of the late Signor Eugene and Julia Ellis Kallberg. Mrs. Thornton's family recalls her love of yardwork, gardening and cooking. The joy of her life was taking care of her husband and children. She was a member of Five Points Baptist Church. Mrs. Thornton is preceded in death by: her husband of 56 years, James L. Thornton, who passed away in 1999, a son, James R. "Jimmy" Thornton, who passed away in 2006 and a sister, Birdie Galloway. She leaves behind, one daughter, Judy Thornton Owens, one son, Bobby Thornton, both of Fernandina Beach, ten grandchildren, Karen Owens, Signe Lowe, Brian Owens, Chris Owens, Lena Watson, Laura Beran Layton Thornton, James R. Thornton, Jr., Donna James, Tori Thornton and five great grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 3:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, from the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with Reverend George Young, officiating. Mrs. Thornton will be laid to rest beside her husband in Bosque Bello Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family members.
