Sylvester Clement (Bud) Tanking, 82, of Salina, died Tuesday June 24, 2014. He was born in Nemaha County near Seneca, KS on the family farm June 21, 1932. He was the second of 3 children born to Helen Marie (Weber) and Paul John Tanking.

Bud attended country schools in Nemaha and Brown Counties, graduating from Fairview High School in 1950. After serving in the US Navy with a major assignment to the USS Hornet CVA 12 during the Korean War he attended the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley, graduating in 1959 with a BS in Industrial Arts and Physical Education.

He began his teaching and coaching career in Horton, KS in 1959. In 1961 he moved to Bison where he taught and coached. In 1967 he was awarded Outstanding Young Educator of Rush County. Upon unification of school districts Bud coached and taught in the USD 403 Otis-Bison district at Otis, KS. During summer breaks he attended Ft. Hays State University, receiving his Masters Degree in Education in 1965. In 1971 he received his Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling.

In the fall of 1976 Bud moved to Saline County where he began 16 years as a Guidance Counselor with coaching duties at Southeast of Saline School and retired from USD 306 in 1992. Bud was a member of the Gypsum Lions Club, Elks Lodge #718, Elks Men's Golf Association, life member of the National Education Association and the KNEA, St Mary's Catholic Church and American Legion Post #62.

Bud married Mary Ann (Nelson) on June 2, 1958. She survives in the home. Other survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Paul Tanking of Baldwin City and David Martin (Laureen) Tanking of Lindsborg; daughter, Jana Marie (Rod) Kennemer of Garden City; step-brother, Robert Lawrence (Peggy) Tanking of Belleville, ILL; grandchildren, Suzanne Marie and Olivia Lynn Tanking and Sean Robert Kennemer.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; stepmothers, Mary Andres Tanking
and Mabel McFall Tanking; brother, Martin William Tanking and sister, Celene Marie Henry.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday at St Mary's Catholic Church, Salina, with burial in Mt Calvary Cemetery, Salina.
