Following an illness of about twelve hours, John A. Hilfiger, head of the grocery firm of J.A. Hilfiger & Sons, died in the home of his son, Charles R. Hilfiger, West College street and Belmont avenue, Wednesday evening, December 8, at 6:30, aged 70 years and seven months.
Death was caused by an apoplectic stroke received about 7 o'clock Wednesday morning, soon after Mr. Hilfiger reached his store. A physician was summoned, and Mr. Hilfiger was removed to his son's home in an automobile. He rallied little if any, and passed away in the early evening.
Mr. Hilfiger was born in the vicinity of Franklin, Pa., May 9, 1845. he had been a resident of Canonsburg almost thirty years, having come here from northern Pennsylvania in January, 1886, when the local oil and gas development was in its early stages. He was engaged in oil development for eighteen years, having followed this business in the upper oil fields before coming here, and continuing in it for several years after becoming a resident of Canonsburg. Quitting the oil field Mr. Hilfiger and his sons, A.H. and Charles R., engaged in the grocery business fifteen or more years ago, and had continued in this business successfully since.
He leaves the following children: Adam H., Charles R. and Mrs. Frank A. Welch of Canonsburg, Mrs. H.C. Cramer of Franklin, Pa., Mrs. C.P. Crowl, Volant, Pa., and Mrs. P.C. Hoffman, Canonsburg. O.C. Hilfiger of Waynesburg and Nathaniel Hilfiger of California are brothers and Mrs. Susan Hakes of Gillett, Pa., a sister of the deceased. Mrs. Hilfiger died suddenly on January 9, 1911. A daughter, Jessie, preceded her.
Mr. Hilfiger was an active member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church. He also held membership in Canonsburg Lodge, No. 893, I.O.O.F., the Knights of Macabees, and the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
Funeral services will be held from the home of Charles R. Hilfiger, 200 West College street, Friday afternoon at 2:30. Burial will be in Oak Spring cemetery.
