I have no obituary but will write a few words about what I know or have heard about Great Grandma Thompson.
Also of note here, her gravestone has wrong dates on it. She was born in 1841 and died in 1923(verified by records I found).
____________

Karine Johannesdtr Gjesfjeld Johnson (American surname used) was born on 28 Jan 1841 along with her twin sister, Martha to Johannes Gabrielsen and Martha Jonasdtr. Gronvig Gjesfjeld in Årdal in Hjelmeland, Rogaland, Norway. [Her twin died on 6 Feb 1845 at age 4]. She also had siblings, Jonas, Margrethe, Johanes and Gabriel died as infants, and Johannes aka: John G. Johnson in America. Karine was baptised on 6 Jan 1802. She emigrated from Norway on 13 Apr 1857. Her brother used the name John G. Johnson and he served in the Union Army, was a farmer and a Minnesota State Legislator.

Karine married Halvor Torkelsen Langeland Thompson in abt.1859 in West Union, Iowa [doc. not located]. Halvor was the son of emigrants, Torkel Torkelsson Haga Langeland (aka:Thompson) and Anne Halvardsdtr. Varland.

Her husband bought 40 acres of land on 20 May 1862 in Martin Co., Minnesota but abandoned it in 1863 after the Indian uprising in New Ulm. It was about 1862 when the surname of Thompson was chosen for the family.

Karine's husband was drafted into the Union Army in 1863, it was canceled but he then enlisted. I don't have stories about what Karine did while he was fighting in Tennessee, etc. After the war her husband bought land in Moscow, Minnesota.

Karine had 10 children: Torkel Halvor, Anna Maria, Martha Andrine, Henry John, Bertha Helene, Carl Andreas, Martin Joel, Judith Ellen, Bennet Francis and Edwin Marvill. She became paralysed in her legs after the birth of Edwin. She was an invalid until she died on 14 July 1923 at age 82.

They lived in a house built like a duplex. Her son Edwin and his wife Alma lived in half of the house and helped care for her. Her granddaughter, Annella said she called her her little dolly. She was very fond of her grandmother Karine.

The family must have called her Caroline as that is what her daughter B. Helene had engraved on the gravestone.

Karine "Caroline" Thompson is buried next to her husband in the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery located on Mower-Freeborn Rd. north of Corning, Minnesota.
