Douglas, the son of Margaret B. Erickson of Montgomery AL and Norbert Fried of Missoula MT was a veteran of the US Marine Corps of over six years of service having reenlisted on January 19 1964 in Naples Italy. In Vietnam he was assigned to and serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Operation KINGFISHER, under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 9th Marines, Company H was defending the Marine FSB at Con Thien, Hill 158 in northern Quang Tri Province. The defensive position came under heavy NVA mortar, rocket and artillery fire on September 25 which resulted in the deaths of seven men. Sgt Fried was one of the casualties, he was killed by fragmentation wounds from the hostile artillery fire.
