Jenny Wanda Barkmann was from a low-income family in Hamburg, Germany. In 1944, she became recuited by the SS to be a guard, or Aufseherin, in the Stutthof Concentration camp. When World War II ended, she fled to a train station in Gdansk, Poland to get away from the Soviets in May 1945. She was captured, put on trial and hanged on Biskupia Gorka Hill. She was single, having never married. Her famous last words were "Life is indeed a pleasure and pleasures are usually short!" It is possible that she might have been related to Ernst Barkmann (25 Aug 1919 - 27 Jun 2009), who was also in the SS. He was an Oberscharfuhrer (technical sergeant) in Das Reich Division.
