George Suder Jr.

George Suder Jr. passed away, peacefully surrounded by his family, on June 4, 2014. On the day before he died, he spent the time in his beloved mountains with son, Ross, getting firewood. He still ran his own chainsaw and wood splitter. Dad was happy and active gardening, working on his acreage, and visiting friends and family until the Lord called him home. George was born August 19, 1923, at Fort Sam Houston, TX to Ida and George Suder. In 1927, his family moved to the Okanogan Valley, where he made his home for the rest of his life. Shortly after his graduation from Okanogan High School in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during WWII in Panama. After the War was over, he returned home to Omak, where he began in earnest to court Ruth Bangert, the love of his life. They married in 1948, and were married for 60 years, until Ruth's passing in 2008. They had three children, Karen, Scott and Ross, and set about raising their family. George made a lifetime career with the U.S. Forest Service, first as a heavy equipment operator and later he returned to school and became a resident engineer, designing and constructing roads in the Okanogan National Forest. If you have enjoyed the mountain roads, you can almost guarantee that he designed the bridges and roads that spanned a 40+ year career. Dad was an amazing husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He happily hauled his daughter, Karen, to horse shows and rodeos. He shared his passion for the outdoors with his sons, Scott and Ross, teaching them to hunt and fish. They shared many hunting trips over the years, hunting deer and elk locally and in the Blue Mountains. He was the longest living member of the Okanogan Masonic Lodge, active for over 60 years. He was active in the Okanogan Sheriff's Posse, the Boots and Saddles Club, Omak Stampede Association, and various local charities. George was an amazing storyteller and all who knew him, enjoyed spending time with him. He was a man of integrity, honesty and wisdom. Generous with his time, he continued his love and support with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending yet more horse events, sports and other activities right up until the end of his life. A true gentleman and a 'Man's Man', he lived his life his way and what a life it was.
George was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Grant (Bill); son, Scott Suder (Debby); son, Ross Suder (Mary); his sister, Irene Atkinson; nephews, and nieces; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. His family was blessed to have him and he will be remembered with much love and laughter forever.
Graveside Service will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Conconully Highway. A Celebration of George's Life will follow at his home at 50 Hubbert Road after the Service. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriner Hospitals or Wounded Warriors organization. Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
