SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Joseph Leroy Mettenbrink, 86, of Summerville, formerly of Kearney, Neb., died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, in Summerville. Burial will be in McCook, Neb.

He was born May 4, 1928, in Kearney to Albert and Cecilia (Byrnes) Mettenbrink.

In 1950, he married Ardis Schroeder of Culbertson, Neb. She preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Brad Duff of Summerville; son, Joseph C. Mettenbrink of Omaha, Neb.; daughter, Sally Lambertus of Gothenburg, Neb.; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Wendall Browning of Everett, Wash.; grandchildren, Heather Strickland of Lexington, Neb., Chelsey Hall of Cozad, Neb., Ryan Duff of Augusta, Ga., and Kyla (Duff) Woelfle of Knoxville, Tenn.; great-granddaughter, Laura Schwarzkopf of Lincoln, Neb.; and nephew, Bill Willard and his wife, Carol, of Everett.

Joe graduated from Kearney High in 1946 and while attending Kearney State College was drafted into the U.S. Army. Joe served in the Korean War where he earned three Bronze Stars.

Joe retired from the Maintenance Department at Kearney State College in 1991.

Joe was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, camping and boating. He was a member of the Elks, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars club and served on the VFW firing squad for many years.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Norm Lambertus.
