OBIT:
Sawyer County Record Sept. 17, 1936
Alfred Haselhuhn of our Yesterdays Gone

Alfred Albert Haselhuhn was born in Germany on July 16, 18765, and passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1936.

He was only 7 years old when the Haselhuhn family emigrated to the United States in 1882. They came to Wisconsin, settling in Shell Lake for a time, then on two farms in succession in Barron County. At an early age Alfred became employed in lumber mills at Cumberland, Barronette, Mason, and elsewhere. In later years he was employed as a clerk in a general store in Mason after which he moved to Hayward as a partner in a meat market located back of the Post Office building. In a year the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Haselhuhn became sole proprietor of the North Star Market where William Biegler had previously been located. A fire partially destroyed the building and in a few years the present commodious and modern building was erected and an up-to-date business established. The second floor of the new building houses the Masonic lodge room.

Mr. Haselhuhn met Miss Fannie Briggs at Washburn, Wis., and marriage took place in the Congregational Church of Ashland on April 16, 1898. The couple lived in Ashland for a short time and then moved to Mason where they lived until 1907, when they came to Hayward. To this union were born: Mrs. Inez Peterson, Hayward; Mrs. Hazel Berger, Ashland; Vinton and Homer of Hayward; and Mrs. Aileen Montgomery of Pine Ridge, SD. There are nine grandchildren. Other immediate relatives are six brothers and one sister: Hugo, Mason; George, Barron; Henry, Sand Point, Idaho; Edward, Shafer, MN; Walter and William, Barron; and Edna, Stanley, WI.

Alfred Haselhuhn was a member of the Masonic fraternity; Roay Arch, Eastern Star, and Modern Woodmen.

Mr. and Mrs. Haselhuhn were members of the local Congregational Church, regular and loyal in attendance and sincere and active workers. Mrs. Haselhuhn had been secretary and president of the ladies aid, and Mr. Haselhuhn was a trustee of the church. He helped with furnishing trees and good soil for the lawn which have been of material aid in beautifying the premises. His beautiful bouquets, cut from his own garden, graced the pulpit each Sunday morning. He has gone to join Mrs. Haselhuhn who preceded him in death on May 11, 1936.

Alfred Haselhuhn was public spirited and a leader in public welfare. He had served on the Sawyer County board of supervisors, one the City Council, and had taken part in numerous drives for improvement of city and country lands, roads, streams, etc. to which he donated liberally. No better example of honesty and integrity may be found anywhere. His ambitions for a clean, upright community are well known and to this end he was consecrated.

The funeral was held from the Congregational church on Saturday afternoon, Rev. WJ Davies in charge. The Masonic lodge attended in a body. The church was crowded with people and many stood outside. The music was rendered tenderly by the church choir with Mrs. FR Nash directed and Evelyn Davies at the organ. The Masonic ceremony of burial was given at the graveside.

So has ended one of the finest lives of this community.
