Wife celebrates 100 article:

Margaret Bathauer of Loveland turned 100 on Saturday. A Colorado native and Loveland resident turns 100 on Saturday, April 5.

Margaret Bathauer was born April 5, 1914 to Katherine and Adam Schell, who were Germans from Russia that immigrated in the late 1800s, coming into America through Ellis Island.

Her father worked in a steel mill in Pueblo and then in the beet industry. "I worked in the beet field when I was 6 years old," Margaret said. "I was raised on a farm, doing farm work, all kinds of farm work." She went to school in Ione and Fort Lupton. "I rode to school in horse and buggy with my older brothers," Margaret said. "I did go to school in Rockford too. That's where I went to kindergarten."

She had four sisters and six brothers, one of whom is still living in Denver at 96. She said enjoyed the weekends and attending church with her family in Brighton and Fort Lupton.

Margaret worked for a family when she was 16, taking care of their children, until she was married at 20. She was married to Gotlieb "Scottie" Bathauer in 1934.

After they were wed, they lived in various places until they settled in northwest Denver, where they resided for 45 years. The couple had two sons and a daughter and were married for 65 years, until Scottie's death in 1999. "I've been in Loveland ever since then," she said. "I love Loveland, I really do. I liked it when I first moved here and I'm still here."

Margaret now has 14 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 23 great-great grandchildren—five generations living in Loveland.

Her favorite memories are of her travels to places like California, Chicago, Idaho and Wyoming, to visit with friends. "And relatives, of course, because when you have such a big family, there are a lot of cousins," she said. "We loved to polka dance. Lots of dutch hops." Scottie played accordion and the dulcimer while she sang and danced. She is a devout Catholic, praying every day and attending St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish.

There is a party planned in Margaret's honor, for close friends and family at noon on April 12 in the event center of Locust Park condos, where she lives independently. "She loves her family, loves being around her family. We have parties as often as we can," said her son-in-law John Taylor.
