Oscar Carrillo, a former Duval County politician and state representative, died of kidney failure Tuesday. He was 81.

Carrillo, who spent much of his time at the family ranch in, also co-authored legislation creating the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Carrillo's children spoke of his effect on their lives and his passion for education.

"He taught us everything we know," said Diana Flores, Carrillo's eldest daughter.

"He was generous," said Teresa Carrillo, Carrillo's daughter-in-law. "He had a deep love for his family and his county."

Hugo Berlanga, a former state representative who worked with Carrillo, said his death marks the end of an era in Duval County.

"He was a pioneer in the Legislature in his time," Berlanga said. "He opened the door for a lot of people behind him."
