Born Heinrich Ebel, Abbot Basilius Ebel O.S.B. entered the Abbey of Maria Laach in 1921. He completed studies in theology and history at the Benedictine Archabbey at Beuron, the University of Bonn, and at Sant'Anselmo in Rome. He was ordained a priest in 1925, and earned a PhD in music from Gottingen University in 1930. He was then sent to Brazil, and from 1932-33 served as sub-prior at the Monastery of St. Benedict in Rio de Janeiro. Back at Maria Laach, he served as Novice Master from 1934-1938, and was named Prior in 1939. Then from 1940-1946, Fr. Basilius was selected to be the abbot of the Abbey of St. Mathias in Trier. With the death of Abbot Ildefons Herwegen , he came back to Maria Laach to lead there until retiring in 1966. A primary focus during his time as abbot was to reconcile with the remaining Jewish population of the region after the horror of the Holocaust and the Second World War.
