Hannah was the daughter of Charles Vahn Hanes and Pelena Irvin, who married circa 1854. I found six children for them--Hannah (1856-1928), Elizabeth M. (1857-1945), Charles H. (1863-1910), Henry James (1867-1919) and Mary Alma (1873-1961).

Hannah first appeared with her family on the 1860 Census, living in Walnut Township (Argos area), Marshall Co., Indiana, where Charles Hanes, aged 28, was earning a living as a carpenter. Pelena, enumerated as "Pliney", aged 30, was home with their two daughters--Hannah, aged 4, and Betsy, aged 2.

The family was still living in Walnut Township when the 1870 Census was taken. Charles, aged 38, had taken up farming. Pelena, aged 40, was busy at home with their four children--Hannah, aged 14, Elizabeth, aged 12, Charles, aged 10, and Henry, aged 3.

Four years after that census, Hannah married Martin Hershberger on 18 Jan 1874 in Marshall County. The couple had eight children together: Belle (b.1875), Betsy (b.1879), Arwilda (1882-1968), James (b.1886), Dola (b.1888), Luretta (b.1891), George W. (b.1894), and Jennings B. (1896-1919).

I found the family on the 1880 Census, living in Walnut, Marshall Co., Indiana, where Martin Hershberger, aged 27, was farming for a living. Hannah, aged 24, was home with their two daughters--Belle, aged 5, and Betsy, aged 1.

I wasn't able to check in on the family in 1890 as that year's census records were destroyed in a fire. I was able to catch back up with them in 1900. They were still living in Walnut Township, and Martin, aged 46, was still busy farming. Hannah, aged 45, reported that 1she had had eight children, but that only five had survived to that census. The enumerator must have heard her incorrectly as there were six children home with the couple--Arwilda, aged 16, James, aged 14, Dola, aged 12, Luretta, aged 9, George, aged 5, and Jennings, aged 3, and I found marriage records for the two eldest daughters--Clara Belle married John Franklin Vining on 26 Dec 1896, and Elizabeth married Fred L. Matheny on 26 Sep 1898, both marriages taking place in Marshall County.

Two years after that census, their daughter Arwilda married Lawrence Schrom on Christmas Eve, 24 Dec 1902 in Marshall County.

When the 1910 Census was done, Martin and Hannah had moved to nearby Plymouth, West Township, also in Marshall County. Martin, aged 54, was busy with a new farm. Hannah, aged 53, reported that she had had eight children, and this time she reported that all eight were still alive. The only child still at home with his parents was son Jennings, aged 13.

Sadly, a year before the next census, Jennings died on 10 May 1919 at age 22.

In 1920, Martin and Hannah were still living in Plymouth. Martin, aged 65, was retired. Hannah, aged 64, no longer had her children to tend to. Instead, living with the family were Hannah's 90-year-old, widowed father Charles Hanes, and Gladys Harris, aged 26, identified as a niece.

On 18 Jan 1824, Martin and Hannah celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Sadly, Martin died later that year at age 70. Hannah lived another four years without him, departing this world in the fall of 1928 on September 9th at age 72.

On 18 Jan 1974, Martin and Hannah had been at each other's side for a century, and as of 2014, they had made it to 140 years.
