Maxine A. Surma, 89, of Free Soil, died Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Spectrum Health Ludington. She was born June 14, 1925, in Free Soil, daughter of the late Charles and Malissa Edna (Tyler) Bruesch. She attended Free Soil High School and was a graduate of the class of 1943. Maxine married Francis E. Surma on June 17, 1944, at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Free Soil. He preceded her in death on April 12, 2008.

Over her lifetime she was employed at Consumers Power Company and the ExCello Company until it closed its operations in Manistee. Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and loved to cook for them. She was a member of Saint John Cantius Catholic Church of Free Soil, and a member of the Free Soil Community Schools Alumni Association.

Maxine is survived by her son and daughter in-law, Frank M. Surma and Sue Ellen Cooper of Free Soil; and their children, Nora Rose (Mukund) Sudarsan, Blaine (Allison) Surma and Zoe Surma; her son and daughter in-law, Gregg C. and Tina Surma of Free Soil; and their children, Amy (Brian) Benson, and Kristin (James) Harvey; her daughter and son in-law, Melissa Sue and Dennis Hoeh of Kaleva; and their sons, Chris (Mary) Hoeh, and David (Stephanie) Hoeh and Josh Hoeh; and her granddaughter, Tracy Lynn Hunter; six great-grandchildren, Zaara, Evan, Logan, Blake, Gavin and Mallory; her brother, Virgil Bruesch of Scottville; and her sister, June Dufon of Charlevoix; numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. Maxine was also preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl (Surma) Hunter; her sister, Leota Breece; brother-in-law, Frank Dufon; and a sister-in-law, Harriett Bruesch.

Mass from The Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Friday, August 22, 2014, at noon at Saint John Cantius Catholic Church in Free Soil, with the Reverend Dennis O'Donnell celebrant. Burial will follow at Saint John Cantius Church Cemetery.
