German screenwriter and film director. Born Ewald André Dupont. Dupont wrote screenplays for nearly 50 films in his half-century-long career, and directed more than 50 as well, including the 1928 silent version of Moulin Rouge and Hell's Kitchen (1939). After the Nazi take-over of Germany, Dupont left Europe for the U. S. with director Ernst Lubitsch. Dupont became a U. S. citizen in 1935.
