Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 19, 1918, where he served in the Tank Corps. He was discharged on December 31, 1918 "At the convenience of the government" because he suffered from Dementia Praecox, a chronic, deteriorating psychotic disorder characterized by rapid cognitive disintegration. After leaving the Army, Alfred returned home to Blue Island where he lived with his brother and sister-in-law, Matthias and Dorothy Rose Witt.

On June 5, 1920, in Chicago, Alfred married his sweetheart Rose Holly.

On March 11, 1921, Alfred was admitted to the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Marion, Indiana.

A son, Alfred Karl Witt Jr, was born to Alfred and Rose on April 18, 1921 in Chicago.

On June 3, 1921 Alfred was transferred from the Disabled Soldiers Home to the Soldiers' Ward of the Elgin State Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, where he died on November 3, 1921.
