War-time mayor of Calgary, and one of the citys best known pioneer residents, Dr. Michael C. Costello died at the family residence Sunday after a brief illness. He was in his 61st year.
Although in indifferent health for the past few years, it was not until recently that Dr. Costello was confined to his home and his death came as a shock to his numerous friends.

Dr. Costello was born in Montreal August 2, 1875. When eight years of age, he came west with his father the late J.W. Costello, and in 1883 he was enrolled in the first class of school children which had been engrusted to the care of his father, who was one of Calgarys first teachers.

Upon leaving school he became an apprentice printer and worked side by side with Everett Marshall, dean of Calgary newspapermen, and Captain H.B. Wilson, who was recently retired from the Calgary fire department. His first job was in the composing room of the Calgary Herald.

After completing his apprenticeship heleft the city in 1904 to enter Queens University at Kingston, Ont., where he graduated in medicine. A year later he went to London, Eng., and there completed a post graduate course in medicine. He never practised his profession.

While in Kingston, Ont., he married Miss Pearl Corrigan. Returning to Calgary he decided to enter municipal politics and in 1914, he was elected alderman. The following year he contested the mayoralty, and he served as mayor during the difficult war years of 1915-1918.

Following his retirement from the mayoralty, he became connected with the Calgary Iron Works and continued in an executive capacity in this business for a number of years before retiring because of ill health some years ago.
Dr. Costello saw Calgary grow from the little cow-town village of 1883 to the position it occupies at the present time and down through the years he was actively interested in its development.

He had been a member of the Southern Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers Association since its inception, and in 1931 he was elected president. He was also past deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight of the Calgary Council o. 1182, Knights of Columbus.

Dr. Costello also was greatly interested in amateur sports and in his college days he was known as a soccer-football, rugby-football and hockey star.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Frank and Jack, of Calgary, two sisters, Mrs. S.F. McDonald and Mrs. T.A. McManus of Calgary; and two brothers, Dr. Thomas J. Costello, St. Kitts, British West Indies, and William, of Calgary.
