Jean McCauley, 69, of Decorah, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, at Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, following a seven-year battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs officiating. Organist was Mary Beth Bouska. Cantor was Cindy Schissel. Hymns were “Be Not Afraid,” “Amazing Grace,” “One Bread, One Body,” “Let There be Peace on Earth” and “How Great Thou Art.” Ushers were Rick and Vicki Darling and Jim and Gail Masters. Lectors were Devon Hovey and Craig Rabe. Offertory gift bearers were Keith Garrett, Lyn Lysne, Joanne Hovey and Joyce Garrett. Eucharistic ministers were Mae Davis, Norbert Bohr and Helen Kappes. Casket bearers were Jean’s grandchildren and great-granddaughter: Mason, Mitchell and Madison McCauley; Kelsie, Maggie, Michael and Molly McCauley; Dylan and Samuel Hess; and Jacie McCauley. Interment was at St. Bridget Catholic Cemetery, in Bluffton. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Jean Mary (Garrett) McCauley was born Sept. 25, 1944, the daughter of Earl and Charlene (Lenz) Garrett in Waukon. Jean attended and graduated from Lansing High School in 1962. Jean worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for three years in Decorah. She was united in marriage to Lester McCauley June 27, 1964, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton. Jean stayed at home and raised her children as well as other children until they were all in school. Jean then worked for Wonder Bread and Hostess Cakes, for 33 years, retiring as manager in 2007. Jean loved her family and grandchildren and enjoyed going to all of their activities. She liked to go out to eat with friends and enjoyed trying new foods. She enjoyed gardening in her yard with her flower and hosta gardens. Jean was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and the Ladies Neighborhood Club of Bluffton.

Jean is survived by her husband, Lester McCauley, Decorah; three children: Kevin (Julie) McCauley, Center Point; Steve (Cathy) McCauley, Algona; and Michelle (Steve) Knudtson, Whitehall, Wis.; nine grandchildren: Mason, Mitchell and Madison McCauley; Kelsie, Maggie, Michael and Molly McCauley; and Dylan and Samuel Hess; one great-granddaughter, Jacie McCauley; brother, Keith (Mary) Garrett, La Crescent, Minn.; three sisters: Lyn (Ron) Lysne, Decorah; Joanne (Tom) Hovey, Decorah; Joyce Garrett, Reno, Nev.; one sister-in-law, LaVonne (Alvin) Darling, Burr Oak; along with several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Charlene (Lenz) Garrett; her father- and mother-in-law, Elmer and Gladys (Peterson) McCauley.
