Born Aug. 22, 1933 in Linton, she was the daughter of Homer Glenn and Helen Lola (Russell) Flater. On July 2, 1950 she married Glenn Roy Cass.
She was a retired associate professor of education from Indiana State University, where she was employed from 1969-95. She had previously taught second grade at the Bloomfield Elementary School from 1961-69. She was co-owner of Cass Beauty Shop in Linton from 1954-61 and co-owner of Mary's Hallmark in Martinsville from 1985-90. She was a 1951 graduate of Linton High School and received her B.S. and M.S. in Education from Indiana State University.
She was a member of the New Hope Community Church of God in Terre Haute. She was a member of the Psi Iota Xi in Linton, Indiana State Teacher's Association, the Phi Delta Kappa, the National Education Association, Indiana State Alumni Association, and the National Reading Association. She enjoyed working with missions and charities, reading, children, teaching, and her family. She studied oil painting with Joe Trover and sang gospel music with her family for several years as the "Gospel Notes."
Survivors include: her husband Glenn Roy Cass of Martinsville; a daughter Carole Cass Buskirk of Martinsville; two grandsons, Kyle S. and Dr. Travis L. DeVault; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jerry and Jack Flater, both of Linton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Lola Irene Halbach.
Funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Neal & Summers Mortuary, 110 E. Poston Rd., Martinsville, with the Rev. David Garshaw officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Terre Haute.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the mortuary.
