John was the husband of Linda K. Zuehlsdorf, and the loving father of Daniel R. Zuehlsdorf of Kailua Hawaii, predeceased by his father Daniel C. Zuehlsdorf he was the son of Emeline H. Zuehlsdorf of Carleton Nebraska and dear brother of PVT Robert D. Zuehlsdorf of Company C, 3d BN, 1st Advanced Individual Training Battalion, Fort Dix, New Jersey. He enlisted in the US Marines Corps on May 27 1966 was commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve in Quantico VA. On extended active duty in Vietnam, he was assigned to and served with HMH-463, MAG-16, 1st Marine Air Wing, FMFPac.

During the month of July, Marine Air Group 16 was providing support for the 1st and 3d Marine Divisions from the Marble Mountain Air Facility in Quang Nam Province.

On July 28, YH-16, a CH-53A from HMM-463 on a resupply mission developed an inflight fire causing the aircraft to crash in a rice paddy and burn killing all five crew members onboard. 1stLt John Zuehlsdorf, one of the casualties was the co-pilot on board during the fatal crash.
