Hannelore Ursula Helm Banister passed away at the Summit at Lakeway, Texas, on December 18, 2013. She was born in Goldap, East Prussia on February 21, 1929, and was one of five sisters, including Lucia, Eva, Christel and Renate, born to Hertha and Heinrich Helm. Hannelore is survived by her three children: Henry Martin Gandy (born to Al Gandy, deceased), Austin, Texas, Tommy Wayne Gandy and Diana Gandy (born to Thomas Cary Gandy, deceased). She was married also to John Randolph Banister, III (also deceased). She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Brunhilde Doppler, Kochel am See, Germany; Sylvia and Horst Wolf, Sun City, Arizona; Rudiger and Christa Brosch, Aachen, Germany; Karsten and Manuela Doppler, Munich, Germany; Matthias Ahrens and Christian Doppler, both of Canada; and Saskia and Sascha Brosch of Germany. Also, Leslie Leonard, Spicewood, Texas; Larry and Shelley Leonard, Georgetown, Grand Cayman; Bill and Renee White, Annapolis, Maryland; and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Hannelore was active in the Republican Party, helped found and establish the Hill Country Arts Foundation, worked in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. House of Representatives and in Vienna, Austria for the International Atomic Energy Agency. Hannelore loved to travel and her passion for learning took her to far away countries all over the world. Memorial Services for Hannelore Ursula Helm Banister will be held at 1:00 P.M. Sunday, January 26, 2014, in the Smith Chapel at Riverbend Church, 4214 Capital of Texas Highway North, Austin, Texas, 78746. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the German-American Heritage Foundation, 719 6th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20001, in memory of Hannelore Helm Banister.
