DEATH OF MRS. LUBBE ORTGIES

The death of Mrs. Luebbe Ortgies occurred at the family home in Monticello yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock. She had been ill for some time with carcinoma of the liver, and during the past three weeks had been in bed. Mrs. Ortgies was a daughter of the late Gerd and Anna (Hebben) Eilers. She was born in Hanover, Germany, June 10, 1853. Her maiden name was Margaretta Ellers. Her marriage occurred at Reepsholt, Germany, May 6, 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Ortgies lived in Germany for several years following their marriage. They emigrated to the United States in 1892, settling in Atlantic county, Illinois, where a brother of Mrs. Ortgies resided. A short time afterward they removed to Davenport where they lived for two years. They then came to Jones county and resided In Lovell township for a year and in Wayne township for two years. Thereafter they purchased a farm In Castle Grove township which was their home until 1914, thirteen years ago, when they became residents of Monticello. Mr. and Mrs. Ortgies celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage May 6, 1926. A dinner was given at noon on that day in their honor at the home of their son, Henry Ortgies, in Castle Grove township. The dinner was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Rev. O. Sitzler, at that time pastor of St. Peter and Paul's church, delivered a congratulatory address on behalf of those present.
Mrs. Ortgies was the mother of seven children, six of whom are now living, viz: Henry, of Castle Grove township; Mrs. Henry Ulferts, of Cass township; Mrs. Herman Schaeffer, of Castle Grove township; Mrs. Johannes Ulferts, of Cass township, and Louis, of Castle Grove township. One son, Emil, died several years ago of influenza. Mrs. Ortgies is also survived by 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
