Lars Johanson Flatebø was born on the Flatebø farm in Ænes Parish, Kvinnherad Clerical District, Hordaland, Norway. The parish register entered his birth date as 3 Jan 1834 and his baptism as 5 Jan 1834. He was confirmed 12 Nov 1848 in the Kvinnherad church at Rosendal, Hordaland, Norway. He married Anna Torbjørnsdotter from the neighboring Øyre farm on 11 Oct 1854 in the Ænes church at Ænes, Hordaland, Norway.

The Kvinnherad parish register records the births of six children to Anna and Lars:

2. Kristi, 1857-,
3. Johan Daniel, 1859-,
4. Karen, 1860-,
5. Guro, 1862-,
6. Jens, 1865-.

The family emigrated to America in 1866. The parish register dated their departure from the parish April 1866. They departed Bergen 27 April 1866 on the bark Martha and arrived in Quebec on June 12. From there they traveled on to the Norwegian community in Olive township, Clinton County, Iowa. Lars’ wife died shortly thereafter on 12 July 1866.

On 4 Dec 1866 he married Anna Andersdotter Sæberg, the widow of John Andersson [Kirkhus]. To the marriage Anna brought 5 children:
1. Britha, 9 Jul 1855-, born on the Sæberg farm in Norway,
2. Anna, 22 Dec 1856-, born on the Sæberg farm in Norway,
3. Anders, 18 Mar 1859-, born on the Sæberg farm in Norway,
4. Peder Olai, 18 Feb 1862-, born in Olive township,
5. John Andreas, 21 Mar 1864-, born in Olive township.

On 11 Jun 1868 a son, Lars Larsen, was born to Lars and Anna. Anna Andersdotter died on 5 Oct 1872 and Lars Johanson on 28 Mar 1878.

The family took the surname of Johnson. In the 1870 Federal Census, the family is located living on a farm in Berlin township (later renamed Grant), Clinton County IA.
