He was born January 22, 1928, in Paris, Illinois, and was the son of the late Floyd and Virgie Hill Coombes. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post 369 in Hume, IL. He was a retired grain farmer and a member of Smith Chapel Church in Union Grove.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Wallace Harp; a granddaughter, April Harp; two sisters, Katherine Boyd and Barbara "Bobbie" Coombes; two brothers, Carroll "Bud" Coombes and Paul Coombes; a sister-in-law, Mary Coombes; and two brothers-in-law, Gordon Moore and Carroll Boyd.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline "Polly" Gregory Coombes, whom he married on July 7, 1951; three daughters, Celesta (Charlie) Galey of Newman, IL, Cheryl Harp of Hume, IL, Nancy Vono of Chrisman, IL; a son, Dale Coombes of Olin; two sisters, Ann Moore of Hume, IL, and Cora Jane (Benny) Ballard of Lewisville, IL; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 PM today (October 4, 2014) in the Ernest Troutman Memorial Chapel at Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony.
Memorial service will be held at a later date in Illinois.
