Joyce Elizabeth Hollyfield Holchak died Wednesday, December 31, 2003, shortly after being diagnosed with liver cancer.

She was born May 15, 1929 at Waelder, Texas to Otto Moses Hollyfield and Dora Edna Hill Hollyfield and was reared in Thompsonville, a rural community west of Waelder, educated at Waelder public schools, attended the University of Texas, graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1949 and began a teaching career in home economics at Wallis, Texas. She married William Howell Holchak June 2, 1950 in Waelder Methodist Church and they resided for almost 2 years in Cleveland, Texas, where he edited the newspaper and she taught home economics. Her teaching career was interrupted when her husband went on active duty with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. She joined him in Japan, where they resided until his discharge in 1954. She then taught school in Three Rivers, Texas, where her husband was co-owner and editor of the newspaper for 18 months. They moved to San Antonio in June, 1955, where he began a career in advertising and public relations. Mrs. Holchak stayed home to rear her two sons, Glenn and Paul, until 1970, when she returned to her teaching career in SAISD. She taught at Fannin Elementary School for two years and then at John Pershing Elementary School as a 1st grade teacher for 18 years. She was a life-long Methodist and she and her husband joined St. Andrew's Methodist Church in 1955 and remained active until her death.

Mrs. Holchak was President of the Wesleyan Service Guild, the Woman's Society of Christian Service (forerunner of the United Methodist Women), Chairperson of the Church Council, served on several commissions, taught Sunday School and was a volunteer with Andy's Kids, an after-school day-care program. Mrs. Holchak was also a leader in Bible Study Fellowship and served as President of Chapter O, PEO. She was a cancer survivor and served as a volunteer for the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in the Medical Center for six years. She was honored as CTRC Volunteer of the year in 1996. After devotion to her family and church, her first love was tending the flowers and plants in her yard. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John Harper Hollyfield and Brooks Hill Hollyfield.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Bill Holchak; sons, Glenn William Holchak of San Antonio and Paul Hollyfield Holchak of New York City; several nieces and numerous cousins.
