All of the following information was derived from our research and two contributors whom we have given credit.
Samuel H. Kirk was my 3rd GGF(Don G. Kirk). We found his grave in 1968. By correspondence with Eliza Woodall, a Jackson Co. Alabama historian and author. She told us of a deed of Samuel's 40 acres of land in the Dry Creek Cove of western
Jackson Co. AL. The land described as the SE/4 of the NW/4 of Section 28 Twp 2, Range 3 East containing 40 acres. It was deeded to a neighbor, Edmund Williamson, to build a "stone wall as monument" over the graves of Samuel and his daughter, Hannah Caroline. In 1968 we contacted a neighbor who knew of the graves and took us to a very overgrown area. It took a lot of clearing just to get into the grave. We found it just as the deed described, two raised 'rock wall' monuments and only two graves there. The grave marker was from native stone and hand engraved lettering:

1850 census of Jackson Co. Ala. showed him born in 'Merriland' and daughter, Hannah Caroline was on this census, age 9. One added bonus on this deed was the signatures of Samuel's children by his first marriage confirming them. The spouses of the two girls also signed the deed. The signers of the deed were Joseph Kirk, John Kirk-by Joseph Kirk, agent, Garrett Kirk, Samuel Beene & Polly Beene, Obediah (X) Wynne, Fanny (X) Wynne.

Search for Samuel's parents:
Garrett Kirk was on Cecil Co. MD 1790 census, the first census, with wife, 1 son and 2 daughters. Garrett Kirk married Mary Hutchison Dec. 18, 1777 in Cecil Co. Maryland. (Have copy of marriage record) Garrett's wife was not Sarah Wingate as has been recorded and copied many times. Nancy Carlberg, a professional genealogist and descendant of John Kirk, found that two adjacent names were transposed. Hutchison was possibly son, Samuel's middle name. Mary Hutchison's father was likely Gavin Hutchison. She also said she had traced the Hutchisons back to County Down, Ireland. For further information on Garrett's father contact D & N Kirk.

Garrett Kirk and family were not on the 1800 census of Cecil Co. MD so we assume they were on their way to new lands. Garrett Kirk and son, Samuel Kirk were found on a tax role in 1806 in Knox Co. KY. Garrett Kirk was found on this tax role 1807-1810. In 1810 he was also on the 1810 census of Knox Co KY. We followed Garrett Kirk to Boone Co. and Livingston Cos KY and finally to Jefferson Co. Illinois.

Samuel Kirk's 3 sons were Garrett-1801, John-1803 and Joseph-1804. They were born before the tax role of 1806. The sons report on census that they were born in TN, one said KY. We doubt that the state line was very well defined back then. In 1810 Hawkins Co. TN, Samuel is on a tax list of Gillenwaters Co. also in 1816 we find Samuel with land in Hawkins Co. TN. He and family were next found in what would later become Alabama probably after rafting the Tennessee River as there were no roads and only Indian trails. Samuel Kirk found one of the 'hollers' in western Jackson Co that had arable land and a spring coming out of the mountain which flowed year round. We found this Spring on his old place in 1968.

Samuel H. Kirk named his first son Garrett which further verifies Samuel's father as Garrett Kirk who married Mary Hutchison. Samuel H. Kirks 1st wife was probably a Lamb, as descendants of son, John was said to have married his cousin, Mary Polly Lamb. There is about an 8 year gap between the last son, Joseph born 1804 and the birth of Mary in 1812. There was likely a second marriage possibly to a Wilson because Mary Kirk Beene, daughter of Samuel said she was raised by her aunt, Anna Wilson wife of Samuel Wilson. Samuel Wilson was also in Gillenwaters Company In 1816. The Wilsons and Beenes were neighbors on the 1850 census in Marion Co. TN. Also both Mary and Fanny named sons Samuel Wilson.

Samuel Kirk’s children by first marriage:
Garrett Kirk b. 1801 KY or TN md Mary McCrary and Mrs Cyntha Choat. Garrett and wife are buried in Coon Creek Cemetery, Wright Co. MO.
Joseph Kirk b. about 1803 in KY or TN md Mary Methvin. Joseph died after 1866, death and burial unknown.
John W. Kirk b. 11-16-1804 KY or TN md Mary Lamb. They are buried in Kelly Church Cem. Green Co MO.

Children by his second marriage to probably a Wilson:
Mary Kirk b. 4-29-1812 in TN, married Samuel Beene. They are buried in Beene-Raulston Cem. Marion Co. TN
Frances Kirk b. 1813 TN md Obedial Wynn. Burial probably Wright Co. MO.

Samuel's third marriage was to Sarah Methvin in June 5, 1819 Madison Co. AL.
Children:
Elizabeth A., Levi T, son, Nancy, James, William, Samuel, Morgan, Hannah Caroline (buried next to her father, Samuel.) Sarah Methvin Kirk is on the 1860 census of Pike Co. AR. Sarah's death and burial unknown.
Note: Much of this early history was pieced together using census, tax, National Archives, deeds, probate records and correspondence.

Joseph Kirk born about 1803 in KY or TN
Joseph married in 1824 to Mary 'Polly' Methvin, a sister of Samuel H. Kirks third wife, Sarah Methvin. Joseph was found on the 1830 and 1840 census' of Jackson Co. AL and the 1850 census of Limestone Co. AL.
Polly Kirk was living with her daughter, Lavina Toney on the 1860 and 1870 census of Izard Co. AR. Lavinia married James P. Toney Sept. 29, 1850 Limestone Co. AL. Polly was born 29 July, 1801 and died 16 July, 1877. She is buried in Unity Cemetery, Izard Co, AR
We have not found the grave of Joseph Kirk. He first owned land in the same township as his father. The last document found was a deed dated 10-5-1866 Jackson Co, AL, Deed H pg. 511
Joseph Kirk to John Smith sold 100 acres on the Paint Rock River. This was right after the Civil War ended so we know Joseph survived the war. Joseph died after October 5,1866.

Frances Fanny Kirk, the youngest daughter married Obediah Wynn in Marion Co. TN. They were on the 1850 of Marion Co. TN and 1860 census Wright Co. MO. Obediah Wynn was killed in Missouri during the Civil War. She was on the 1880 census of Johnson Co. TX with son, W. B. Wynn and she possibly died in Wright Co MO. This needs verifying.
