Born in Herzog (Susly) Russia to Joseph Braun (1814-Abt 1885) and Barbara/Elizabeth Wittman (1818- Abt 1885). He is listed as Georg Michael in the Russian census but US records only list him as Michael. The Joseph Braun family moved to Liebental, Russia in 1859.

Immigrated to the USA on the SS America arriving in New York, NY on 4 May 1887. Ship passenger list:
Michael Braun, 43, male
Cathr Braun, 42, female
Johann Braun, 19, male
Rosalie Braun, 18, female;Johann's wife
Margr Braun, 11, female; see note 1 below
Joseph Braun, 6, male

The Braun family was followed on the passenger list by Cathr Spies, 47, female with 3 daughters. This was Katharena Braun Weber, sister to Georg Michael Braun and widow of Jacob Spies. She later married Andrew Weber of Liebenthal, Kansas.

June 1, 1900 US Census:
Michael Brown, born Jun 1842, 57 yrs old, married 39 years, farmer, born in Russia, parents born in Russia. Immigration year 1887. Resides in Big Timber Township, Rush County, KS and owns farm.
Wife Katharina, born Mar 1843, 57 yrs old, married 39 years, 9 children, 3 living, born in Russia, parents born in Russia. Immigration year 1887.

Their younger son, Joseph, was also in Big Timber Township, Rush County, KS in 1900 but was listed as a day laborer in the Michael Legleiter household. By 1905 Joseph had married Teresa Rohr from Munjor, KS and his household in the 1905 Kansas census (still in Big Timber Township, Rush County) included his mother listed as Katey Brown, 62 years old.

Die Herzoger lists his date of death as March 1891 but the source of that information is unknown. There is no death record for him in the parish register. In fact, he was listed as a parishioner in an 1897 parish census in Liebenthal KS and was alive through the 1900 US census. He probably died in early 1905. Early burials in St. Joseph cemetery were done chronologically and the pictured cross lies between headstones for Dec. 1904 and one for 1906. The style of the gravestone while unique to St.Joseph is very similar to other Braun headstones in St. Fidelis cemetery and associated with his son, John M. Braun.

Die Herzoger lists the date of death for his wife, Catharine Weirich, as 6 Feb 1898 and there is a record in the parish death register for that date for Catharina, wife of Michael Braun. But that record is usually associated with Catherine Elizabeth Rohleder, wife of a different Michael Braun. Catharine Weirich lived until after the 1905 Kansas census, where she was living with youngest son, Joseph. He moved his family to Park, Gove county, Kansas before the 1910 US census and his family no longer includes his mother in 1910. So his mother probably died by then and is buried in either Liebenthal or Park, KS.

Note 1. The fate of the daughter Margaret on the passenger list is unknown. In the 1900 US census, Catharine Weirich had 9 children with 3 living, presumably including this Margaret. She was probably married by the 1900 US census, but her married name is unknown.
