Born February 6, 1898 to Jacob and Annie Murdock. Jacob Jr. was raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania were he attended Johnstown High School and excelled as a fullback on the school football team. After graduating in 1917, Murdock volunteered for 6 months service as a ambulance driver with the American Field Service. Upon reaching France, Murdock along with many of his fellow volunteers agreed to drive French supply trucks instead of ambulances. After completing his training near Longpont, France, Murdock served in T.M.U. 133. (T.M.U. stood for Transport Militarie Unis).

Upon returning home to the US in the fall of 1918, he enrolled as a student at the Wharton School of Commerce and Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. After leaving school, Jacob went to work with the family business of Murdock Lumber Co., Inc. Tragedy struck the Murdock family in 1934 when his Jacob's father, J.M. Murdock Sr. committed suicide after having been in poor health and constant pain, the result of a car crash he suffered several months earlier. Jacob soon followed his father in death, for a year later he died at the age of 37 of heart disease. He is buried at the Grandview Cemetery, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
