Hipelius, John Joseph
I had a lucky break last week when I found the John Joseph Hipelius family in the New York passenger list 1820-1957. The Hipelius family was on the ship Connecticut which came from Le Havre and docked in New York July 1, 1850 Their names were listed as follows: Carl Hipiluis (born 1836)F.J. Hipiluis (1844),Theodis (1846), Gotfred (1839), J Hipiluis (1811), Lina (1837), MGT (1818), MGT (1843), Soph (1841). I believe J Hipiluis to be my Great great grandfather John Joseph Hipelius which Victoria Vincent had mentioned. MGT (1843)is Margaret Anna Hipelius Belknap my Great Grandmother. Her brother Carl was later called Father Edward Hipelius. POSTED BY Germanine Gerber::: The Hipelius were teachers with a musical giftedness. One of them - Carl - studied law, became a judge of the Prince of Thurn and Taxis and was ennobled to the name "Hipelius gen. (called) von Bayerd". For him I still have to find the exact connection, but I know his place of birth. :-) At the 1st of July 1850 John Joseph H., a half-brother of the son and heir and of my direct ancestor John Bruno (John was a so-called "Leitname" or word-for-word translated "leading name" which was borne by all male descendants) immigrated with his family in N.Y. after a 17-week travel on the ship "Connecticut" from Le Havre/France.He was born about 1811 in Sulzdorf ( http://maps.google.de/ , my father was born in Hofheim 8 mls to the south of Sulzdorf) and went as a merchand to Stadtlauringen where he married Ann Margaret Kaufmann (?) in 1835. They had seven(?) Children there. Ann Margaret died in the year of immigration because of the exertions of the travel. The children were: 1) Doctor Edward H., the Benedictine munk, b. on the 7th of February 1836He took care of his siblings after his mothers dead. His career is recorded in some internet articles.2) Mary Caroline Luisa H., b. on the 7th of June 1837She married Erhard Carl Balluf in Freeport/Illinois and died on the 4th of March 1910 in Chicago.3) Geoffrey H., b. in 1839The cigar maker died with his son (?) Lewis H. in the "Lady Elgin tragedy" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Elgin_(steamship) ) in 1860.4) Sophie H., b. in 18415) Maragret Ann H., b. on the 30th of May 1844(43?)She was nurtured by the Mansfield family in Ohio and married George A. Belknap in Ashtabula where she died on the 7th of March 1923.6) Frank J. Hipelius, b. in 1844 (?)In 1900 he lived in Philadelphia/Pennsylvania.7) Theodis H., b. 18468) Mary Ann H., b. 21st of May (31st of August) 1849 On the 22nd of February 1866 she married Christopher Pepperling in Freeport/Illinois. They took a Trail to Oregon... John Josephs sister Francisca immigrated with her husband named Zimmermann in the U.S. too.
