Adam was the fifth of seven children born to John Ogilvie and Maria Rowan Archman. His mother died in 1886, and some time after her death, he and his older brother Adam were put into the care of Quarrier's Orphan Homes of Scotland.
They were sent to Canada together as British Home Children. They left Glasgow on 30 March 1887 aboard the Siberian, and they arrived in Halifax on 11 April. From there, they were sent to the Marchmont Distribution Home in Belleville, Ontario.
On 29 Apr 1908, he married Elizabeth Jean Spofford, widow of Thomas Couch. They had two children: Jean in 1909 and Bruce in 1914. Elizabeth died of septicemia in Jan 1915, a month after Bruce's birth.
On 12 Nov 1919, Adam married Kate Eileen Chesson, the ex-wife of Richard Lacy Warn.
On 13 Oct 1924 while repairing a heater in their home (16 Woodlawn Ave.), Adam and Kate suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. They were found unconscious by Jean and Bruce when they returned from school. Adam died on the way to the hospital, but Kate recovered.
