WHITEHALL — Robert O. Gauger, age 84, of Whitehall, died on Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

Robert was born July 13, 1921, in Linn, Kan., to Albert and Elsie (Andrews) Gauger. His parents owned and operated newspaper businesses in Linn and Cuba, Kan., and later, Marshfield, Wis. They moved to Trempealeau County in 1939 and founded the Arcadia News and later the Arcadia News-Leader. Bob worked at every newspaper with his parents.

Robert served as a pilot flying heavy bombers in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his bachelor's degree in journalism.

In 1952, Robert purchased the Whitehall Times and was publisher until 1972. Robert then taught a printer apprentice program at Western Wisconsin Technical Institute from 1972 to 1974. He then again served as publisher of the Whitehall Times from 1974 to 1998, when he retired and became Publisher Emeritus.

Robert married Shirley Shaver on September 27, 1945, at Smokey Hills Air Force Base in Salina, Kan. Shirley preceded Robert in death on April 27, 1989.

Bob was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, Whitehall Public Golf Course, Blair Flight Club, Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post 191, Masonic Lodge, Zor Shrine and was a golden member of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association.

Robert enjoyed golfing, hunting, flying and riding motorcycles and scooters.

Bob is survived by three children, Charles (Kathy) Gauger of Whitehall, Susan (Ed) Pearlman of Alpharetta, Ga., and Nancy (Leo) Hagan of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren, Amanda Gauger of Janesville, Elizabeth Gauger of Milwaukee, Paul Pearlman of Alpharetta, Ga., Robert and Jared Hagan, both of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters, Virginia (Clayton) Rein of St. Paul, Minn., and Elizabeth Barry of Leonardtown, Md.; a friend, Heidi Knudtson of Whitehall.

In addition to his parents and wife, Robert was preceded in death by a nephew, Robert Rein.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall. Pastor Jon Becker will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post 191.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2006, at Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
