Donald was born July 5, 1959 in Watervliet, Michigan, son of Walter Edward Summerhill and Vernon Joenell (Goldsmith) Summerhill. Don was a graduate of Bangor High School. After high school Don attended North Western University, married Jennifer Ziemke of Palatine, Illinois and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He retired from the Navy after serving his country for 11 years. He continued his education obtaining a double masters degree and taught classes at Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, Nebraska.

Don was preceded in passing by his parents, two sisters; Patricia Irene Summerhill and Marsha K Summerhill, and brother Bobbie E Summerhill. He is survived by his son Donald Dale Summerhill II, daughter Brittany Summerhill Wilson, brothers; Terry Summerhill, Randy Summerhill, twin brother Ronald Raymond Summerhill, and sisters; Linda Parkhurst and Annetta Huffman as well as many nephews and nieces.
