At the age of twelve, John Peter Riedel came to America with his parents and two sisters on July 8, 1876. On the same ship was nine-year-old Margaret Brungardt, traveling with her parents. The group arrived in New York City and came to Ellis County in August. John and Margaret were married in Herzog, Ellis County, on October 30, 1882.

John Peter was born in Herzog, Russia, on December 5, 1864. He was the oldest of nine children born to Martin and Magathalena Appelhans Riedl. Margaret was also a native of Russia and was born on April 4, 1865. She was the oldest of thirteen children born to Peter and Katharina VonFeldt Brungardt.

After their marriage, John and Margaret set up their household in Herzog Township, north of Victoria. Two daughters and one son were born before Margaret died in 1889 at twenty-three years old. Margaret is buried in Saint Fidelis Cemetery in Victoria, Kansas. The children of John and Margaret were Agatha (Mondero), Andrew, and Catherine (Geist).

That same year, John returned to his hometown in Russia and married Mary Richmeier. Upon their return to Ellis, nine more children were born.

In 1910, John Peter and Mary moved to Pueblo, Colorado, where Mary passed away on April 5, 1918. John Peter died on June 22, 1931. They are both buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ellis, Kansas

The rest of the story: John Peter and Mary adopted two boys, John Mondero and Edward Coburn. John Michael was born in 1891, making him the younger brother of Agatha's spouse, Joseph Mondero. Their mother died in 1895, and their father in 1907. They are buried in Leavenworth, Kansas. Joseph died in 1981 and is buried at Fort Leavenworth.
