Petoskey, Michigan
D. Herbert Reycraft
BIOGRAPHY
Herbert became the Perry Hotel's manager when he was only 19 years old, and only two years after he arrived in Petoskey. While still manager he graduated from the School of Pharmacy at Ferris Institute in 1921. He was the nephew of the Dr. George Reycraft and Dr. John Reycraft. The Doctor Reycrafts each served terms as Petoskey Mayors, and are the founders of the Petoskey Hospital (Little Traverse Hospital).
Mr. Reycraft was born at Highgate, Ontario and lived in Saskatchewan and Vancouver. He was survived by his wife Hazel, and daughters, Cameron "Cammy" and Donna, a student at the University of Michigan..
06/09/2018 A Special Note: Today, Norman Dittmar returned our call. It was wonderful to hear from him. We ended up having a very long visit. Among other things, it was fascinating to learn that in his youth he worked for Herbert Reycraft as a bell boy at the Perry Hotel, and that Mr. Reycraft encouraged his staff to read and study. Along the way, he gave Norman an old copy of his Merriam-Webster Dictionary with a personal note inside. What a lovely memory to have of this fine man--the father of one of our Petoskey Classmates.
