Born in Ribe, Denmark, to Jens Anderson Kruse and Henricke Hansine Nicoline Kragh. Immigrated to the United Sates in October of 1880. Lived in Omaha, Nebraska, for the first ten years, working in breweries while securing a tree claim homestead in Lincoln County. Moved there in the early 1890s. The land was located on the county line where Custer County Drive 782 ends at County Line Rd, just south of where Canyon Rd (Pleasant Valley, Rd) in Lincoln County intersects with County Line Rd. He lived in a sod house until 1900.

Carl met Laura Augusta Holmes of Harvey, IL, through correspondence in 1899 and the married in 1900. They had Carl Holmes Kruse in 1901 and William Kruse 1904. William died soon after. Augusta died of Cancer in 1906. Carl took Carl, Jr., to Denmark, in 1908, with the possibility of returning there permanently but returned to Omaha a few months later where he lived until he died in 1934.

Youngest of eight children, Carl left Denmark in pursuit of land to farm. He was not a particularly religious man in his younger years but reported having a conversion experience on Easter of 1899. He was affiliated with the Holiness Movement taking root in the Midwest. He was Methodist for awhile but in later life worshiped at Omaha Gospel Tabernacle, a Christian Missionary Alliance congregation begun in 1921 (Christ Community Church). He was generous with his money supporting organizations like the China Inland Mission and the American Bible Society.
