August Allen "Augie" Albers went far in the academic world after graduating from Eagle Butte High School in 1947, but not right away. He married, fathered two sons, Terry and Richard, taught at the Cheyenne Agency School, worked as a mechanic and then for Convair Aircraft in California.

In the fall of 1955, Augie returned to South Dakota enrolling at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish. He graduated in 1957 with a BS degree in physical education with a composite major in math, science and physical education. He earned his masters degree at Montana State University at Bozeman, Mont., in 1962. He also completed graduate studies at the University of Wyoming and other colleges.

Augie taught school at Mountain Home, Idaho, and Thermopolis, Wyo., before returning to Spearfish. In Thermopolis, Augie was the high school guidance counselor, founder of the Technical College of the Rockies, and active in civic organizations and church activities.

His deep interest in athletics kept him involved with South Dakota Senior Olympics and he rarely missed a meet. He attended the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, with his son, Rhett, in 2002.

Augie died at his home in Spearfish on Feb. 23, 2006, following a brief illness. He was 76.

He was born Nov. 3, 1929, the fifth child of Otto and Mattie (Woodward) Albers, in Lantry. His early education was at a country school until entering school in Eagle Butte. It was in 1952 that he went to work for Convair Aircraft in California.

On Easter Sunday, April 21, 1957, Augie and Sonya (Bell) Albers were married in the United Methodist Church in Spearfish. She also taught school while they were in Mountain Home and Thermopolis, where their sons Rhett and Jhett were born.

His grandchildren, who were so devoted to their grandpa and bonded deeply with him, were "the light of his life and he theirs," his wife said.

Augie leaves his wife Sonya of Spearfish; sons, Rhett Allen Albers and wife Suzanne of Mobridge, Jhett Lincoln Albers and wife Kathy of Spearfish and Terry Otto Albers of Sisseton; and his grandchildren Ashley, Logan, Austin, Abby and Braxton Albers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Mattie Albers; sisters Mary Ellen Fluharty and Anna Keegan; brothers Cecil and Orville Albers; and his son Richard.
