Rita Marie Celine Schneider Peluso, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 5th, 2013 at Rochester Manor after a brief illness at Heritage Valley Hospital.

The daughter of German immigrant, John Jacob Schneider and his German wife, Rose Catherine (Bier) Schneider, she was born October 29th, 1919 in the newly built family home at 4123 Steiger Street, Castle Shannon, (Pittsburgh) PA, where she lived until moving to 2724 W. Fifth Avenue in the College Hill section of Beaver Falls as a youth. She revisited her actual Steiger Street home on the 94th anniversary of her birth there and happily met with some of the remaining neighbor families. She joked about the whereabouts of her chicken coop and outhouse. She also recently visited her old family home at on College Hill.

Rita was a 1938 January Division graduate of Beaver Falls High School and Providence School of Nursing (1941). She worked as an RN at Providence (Beaver Falls), Children’s and St Francis (Pittsburgh) hospitals.

On November 14th, 1942, she married Joseph Wilson Peluso at the St. Joseph R. C. Church, New Brighton followed by a magnificent reception at the General Brodhead Hotel in Beaver Falls. After a honeymoon in Cleveland, they celebrated a happy and holy life until Joe’s death on January 12th, 1996.

An ardent Traditionalist Catholic, she was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ambridge. She volunteered for endless church functions at the various parishes she attended and her active participation in her faith inspired many through her acts of faith and charity.

She was a founding member of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the St. Padre Pio Prayer Group and the Divine Child Padre Pio Prayer Group. She also was active with the Padre Pio Foundation of America in Cromwell, CT. She with Joe were also active in other St. Pio groups, publications, movies and books as Joe was a close and personal friend of the Italian, stigmatic monk.

She was also the last founding member of the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel de Garabandal Pilgrimage Group and the Rosary Makers of Beaver County.

An avid Pittsburgh and Penn State sports fan, she also favored the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team as a relative had been one. Before marrying Joe, she dated well known Pirate, Frankie Gustine. Absent since her visits to Forbes Field, she attended the Pirates-Marlins game at PNC Park on August 8th a few months before her death which was one of most recent happiest moments.

Her hobbies included Big Band music and jitterbugging which she and Joe enjoyed every night at spots like the Clearview and the Casa Loma. A prolific oil painter, she also was an avid poem writer and teamed with a few Nashville and Los Angeles musicians to release a few songs in the 1960s.

Surviving are a son, Thom, New Brighton who cared for her and with whom she lived; two daughters and their husbands; a sister, Ruth Kenney, Saugatuck, MI; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Fr. Herman (Thomas), Jerome, and John; and four sisters, Dorthea Schneider, Dolores Phelan, Margaretta Bradbury and Dorothy Thompson.

Per Rita’s wishes, there was no public visitation and a private Mass of Christian burial was performed at 10AM on Tuesday, December 10th at the Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ambridge with Fathers Michael Polosky and Walter Wysochansky officiating.

A grave blessing and interment followed in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Brighton.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the family for distribution the various charities and religious organizations that Rita supported. Sincere thanks to all those who have already done so or had Masses said on her behalf.
