Mary was the daughter of German native Jacob Wuchter, Sr.. She was born in Buffalo, New York on December 8, 1852, and her family came to Holy Cross, Iowa in 1859, later settling on a farm east of Dyersville in 1867.

She married Bernard "Barney" Bunkers on September 30, 1873 in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. He was the son of Theodor. Bernard, also known as John Herman, and Mary were the parents of seven children:

Dr. Herman Bernard Bunkers was born about 1874 in Dyersville, Dubuque County, Iowa. He married Alice A. Helander, daughter of Charles Frederick and Ellen (Crosbie) Helander, Sr. Herman died on March 11, 1939 in San Pedro, Los Angeles County, California.
