Valerie Vogel, age 98, of Spooner, WI passed away on January 23, 2015 at the Benedictine Living Center in Spooner. Valerie was born on December 19, 1916 to Frank and Mary (Whitsit) Julia in Memphis, TN.

She attended Lauderdale Schools in Memphis. After graduation, she worked as a billing clerk and as an auditor at Western Union. She met Charles Vogel while he was serving with the Navy in Memphis. They married on August 28, 1946. They moved to the Spooner/Shell Lake are where they farmed and happily raised their family together. They later owned and operated The Capital Bowling Lanes in Shell Lake and the City Club in Spooner. Valerie, along with being a homemaker, worked part time at several businesses in Spooner. She also worked, very successfully, as a sales person for World Book, Kirby, and Avon winning several trips and awards.

Valerie enjoyed reading, gardening, and most of all being with her family.

Valerie is survived by two sons Chuck (Theresa) Vogel, Spooner and Bill (Debbie) Vogel, Spooner; Three daughters, Judy (William) Lewis, Spooner, Nancy (Jerry) Rydberg, Shell Lake, and Mary (Louie) Villella, Trego; Eleven grandchildren, Paul Andrea, Jeff Andrea, John Villella, Scott Vogel, Josh Villella, Chris Rydberg, Billy Vogel, Charlie Vogel, Amy Rydberg, Andrea Riffe, and Julia Vogel; Three great-grandchildren, Madeline Rydber, Katelynn Rydberg, and Benjamin Villella; One sister-in-law, Frances Means; many nieces and nephews.

Valerie is preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Vogel; her parents, Frank and Mary (Whitsit) Julia; and a brother, Victor Julia.

Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church in Spooner, WI on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. A Funeral Mass will begin at 1 p.m. with Fr. Ed Anderson officiating. Online condolences can be left at www.dahlfh.com.

Charles J. “Chuck” “Hev” Vogel of Spooner, died on Sunday, July 29, 2007, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born on March 21, 1922, in rural Spooner to Henry and Anna Marie (Biver) Vogel. He attended rural schools in North Dewey and farmed on his parents’ farm. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was stationed at Great Lakes in Michigan and Millington in Memphis, Tenn., where he met his future wife, Valerie Julia.

The couple was married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Shell Lake on August 28, 1946.

Chuck returned to farm on the family farm in the Spooner area until 1965. He worked at Shell Lake Boat Company and on road construction. He drove a gravel truck and also owned and operated the Capital Bar and Bowling in Shell Lake and the City Club in Spooner until 1973. He also logged until his retirement.

He enjoyed and excelled in baseball in the military and on many local teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards, spending time with family, and telling stories. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Washburn County Democratic Party, American Legion and St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Spooner.

Among those who survive and gratefully shared his life are his wife, Valerie; children, Judy (Bill) Lewis of Spooner, Nancy (Jerry) Rydberg of Shell Lake, Chuck (Theresa) Vogel of Spooner, Bill (Debbie) Vogel of Spooner, and Mary (Louie) Villella of Spooner; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Frances Means and Cecilia Olson, both of Spooner; brother-in-law, Frank Means, of Spooner; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Means.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 2, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Spooner. Fr. Andrew Ricci will be celebrant.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Dahl Funeral Home in Spooner. A 7 p.m. prayer service will be held.

Burial will be in Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Spooner, with military honors accorded by the Wisconsin Military Honors Program, Spooner Detachment.
