He was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Chicago, the son of Steven and Anna (Blumgren) Kratky. On Feb. 24, 1934, Joe married Martha (Kunce) in Traverse City.
Joe retired from the Rennie Oil Company following 26 years of service as a tire man. He was also a partner in owning and operating the Eighth Street Total Gas Station. Along with the above endeavors, Joe also worked as a cattle and cherry farmer.
He was a lifelong member of the Eagles, enjoyed coin collecting, bird watching, dancing and music. He had a great sense of humor and especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family including playing euchre with his children, grandchildren and friends. He was best known for the "Kratky Flyer" - going alone. Joe was a friendly, kind and good guy who was always ready to help a person in need.
Joe is survived by his children, Joseph (Loisa) Kratky Jr., James C. (Barbara) Kratky, John "Jack" Kratky, Jean (Michael) Linger, all of Traverse City, Jerry (Coralyn) Kratky of Kingsley and Janet Pitzi of Sudbury, Mass.; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and his niece, Barbara Curtis of Rolla, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha on March 4, 1997, and their daughter Joan Andrews in December of 1996.
Visitation will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, with Father Jim Gardiner officiating at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Traverse Pavilions or Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation/Hospice House.
