Lester Hilgefort, age 80, formerly of Canal Street, Newport, passed away early Saturday morning, February 21, 2015, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center in Minster, Ohio. He was born December 25, 1934, in Fort Loramie, Ohio, to the late William and Rosa (Poeppelman) Hilgefort. On May 11, 1957, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Newport, Les married Joyce (Goffena) Hilgefort and she survives. Also surviving are three children: Bruce Hilgefort of Sidney, Connie & Dale Schrader of Versailles, Russell & Tami Hilgefort of Englewood; eight grandchildren: Brian Hilgefort, Tamara & TJ Turner, and Alex Hilgefort, Julie & Kevin Whitmer, Kate and Daniel Schrader, Michael and Kristina Hilgefort; three great-grandchildren: Wyatt Hilgefort, Leah Schrader and Ella Whitmer; five siblings: Cletus Hilgefort of Versailles, Edna & Eugene Ahlers of St. Marys, Vernon & Marge Hilgefort of Fort Loramie, Eileen Ahlers of Fort Loramie, Phyllis & Lester Sherman of Minster; sisters & brothers-in-law: Frances Gariety of Piqua, Joan May of Florida, Paul Brandewie of Sidney and Marge Frances of Florida. He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Brian Hilgefort; a grandson, Allen Hilgefort; brothers-in-law, Paul Ahlers and Richard Francis; sisters-in-law, Audry Hilgefort and Rosie Brandewie.

Mr. Hilgefort served in the US Army near the end of the Korean War. A 1952 graduate of Fort Loramie High School, Les retired in 1994 from Piqua Wheel Alignment & Body Shop in Piqua where he had been owner and operator. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, the Fort Loramie American Legion Post #355 and Walkup Country Club. In his day, Les had been an avid bowler. He participated in several bowling leagues over the years. He also enjoyed dancing, softball and RV travel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Monday, March 2, 2015, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church with Rev. Steven Shoup presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with military honor's provided by the American Legion. Friends may call Sunday 3:00 to 7:00 PM and Monday 9:00 to 10:00 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie. Memorials may be made to the Fort Loramie American Legion or charity of donor's choice.
