Vaughn H. Izzard, 86, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, died Sunday, March 1, 2015. He was born June 16, 1928 in Cedarville, Michigan to George Izzard and Rose (Lockhart) Izzard.

Vaughn grew up in Cedarville where he attended Les Cheneaux Public Schools. His mother died when he was five. He worked with his father on their farm and gravel business until he contracted polio when he was 17. He was transferred to Houghton, Michigan where he received treatment paid for by the March of Dimes. After recovering from polio Vaughn returned home to Cedarville where he married Edith Harrison. They began raising their family but later separated and Vaughn moved to Detroit. In Detroit he worked as a machinist for AWT (which stamped parts for the automotive industry).

He married Ann Harvey and they raised two sons. Vaughn retired from AWT in 1993, however he continued to work as a school crossing guard. When he was 70 he fell out of a tree and broke both of his heels. As soon as he was able, he went back to his crossing guard job and continued until he was 83.

Vaughn was a hard worker whose favorite food was potatoes. When he wasn’t working he liked to relax and watch TV. He especially liked to watch the news and provide commentary to the politicians. He was a steady churchgoer who was raised attending Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Hessel, Michigan and belonged to the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan.

Vaughn was survived by his loving wife, Ann Izzard; his sons, Joseph (Karen) Izzard of Shelby Township, and Robert (Itzamara) Izzard, of Grosse Pointe; and his grandchildren, Shannon, Marie, and Giovanna. He was also survived by his sister, Izetta Caufield and his lifelong best friend, Ivan Nordquist.

Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents; son Gary Izzard; brothers, John Izzard, Luke Izzard, Herman Izzard, and Matthew Izzard; and sisters, Ida Izzard and Melissa Haynes.
