Joseph J. Bushnell lived in Brooklyn all of his life until he and his wife Sarah (Sadie) moved to Osage County, Kansas sometime between the 1875 New York State Census and the 1880 Federal Census. He died Sept 1881 and was buried in Kansas. His wife died there the next year in August and was also buried in Osage County, Kansas. Their two children, Mary Adelaide and Ezra Lord, were both less than 3 years old and were put, by the Kansas courts, under the guardianship of their Aunt Adelaide's husband Alfred Van Der Werken of Brooklyn, New York.

Both Joseph J. Bushnell and his wife Sadie Bushnell were moved to Green-Wood Cemetery and reinterred on the same day, March 21,1883.
