Maria Angela Haneklau was born in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany in 1834. She married Herman Heinrich Kobold (Kobolt) in Germany and gave birth to daughter, Elizabeth, on December 4, 1859. The young family emigrated to America in 1860 and settled in Breese, Clinton County, Illinois. In September of 1861 she gave birth to another daughter, Maria Angela, who lived only eight days. On April 22, 1862 her husband, Herman Heinrich, died. On October 4, 1862 Maria Angela married Gerhard Henry Huelskamp, also born in Oldenburg, and who had emigrated in 1860. Its unknown if they had known each other before arriving in Breese. Together they had seven children: Bernard George (Ben), Henry John, John Gerhard, Frank, August, Gerhard Anton, and Theodore. John Gerhard (1868-1872), August (1872-1872), and Gerhard Anton (1873-01874) died as infants and are buried in Breese, though their gravesites are unknown. Also unknown are the gravesites for Herman Heinrich and infant Maria Angela. Gerhard (George) did not officially adopt Elizabeth (Lizette) but raised her as his daughter, and all census forms list her name as Huelskamp (Hulskamp). The document of her marriage to "Gerhart Harbers" shows her as Elizabetha Kobald.
