James Kerr Howes, 69, of Mount Airy, MD, died peacefully in his home on July 1, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 27, 1944, Mr. Howes was the beloved son of Theodore and Romaine Howes. Jim grew up in Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Father Judge High School. Later, as a Naval officer he served in the Vietnam War. Following the war, he returned to school to receive a B.S. in computer engineering and a M.B.A. from Frostburg State University.
He worked for many years at NASDAQ in Washington, DC as Systems Operations Manager and later worked for Montgomery County Public Schools. He was an avid car and motorcycle lover; often refurbishing car engines, like his '72 Stingray Corvette. When Jim wasn't working in his garage, he was hunting with his sons, working in his garden, or enjoying outdoor activities with family and friends. Known for his wit, humor, and wisdom, he was a respected mentor, friend and teacher to all who knew him.
He was a member of Taylorsville United Methodist Church.
Jim was a very committed husband, brother, uncle, father and grandfather. In addition to his wife Susan, he is survived by their six children: Traci Howes & husband Don Kingsbury of Smithsburg, Stephen "Jimmy" Howes & wife Tracy of Waynesboro, Dale Howes of Waynesboro, Angela Ashwell and husband Rupert of London, UK, Michael Trone of York, PA, Erin Livinghouse of Munich, Germany; and eight grandchildren. His siblings are Michael Howes of Texas, Mary Karol Howes of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Claudia Stoffers of Hazlet, NJ, Marguerite Kerr of Hamilton, NJ, and the late Stephen Howes.
Friends may gather at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 5th at Taylorsville United Methodist Church, 4356 Ridge Road, Mt Airy, MD where a memorial service will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project
