Olaf C. Steen was born in Holmes City Township, Douglas County, Minnesota, on October 22, 1894, the son of Ole and Bertina (Soberg) Steen. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trysil Lutheran Church and attended rural schools. Olaf farmed in Holmes City Township and then moved to Canada for a period of three years before moving to Washington and Oregon to work in the logging industry. Olaf later moved to Milwaukee where he began his trade of bricklaying. On January 17, 1929, Olaf was united in marriage to Myrtle Olson in Milwaukee. The couple returned to Alexandria in 1931 where Olaf worked as a bricklayer until his retirement in 1960. Olaf will be remembered for his love of fishing, hunting, and trapping.
He died February 23, 1983, at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood at the age of 88 years. He is survived by sons: Harold Steen of Farwell; Orlano Steen of Alexandria; Carlyn Steen of Alexandria; daughter: Marlys Steen Stegeman of San Diego, California. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Olaf was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle in 1959, four brothers, three sisters, and daughter Norma Elbert in 1967.
Funeral services were February 25, 1983 at the Anderson Funeral Chapel, Alexandria, Minnesota with Rev. Andrew Hargrave officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota. Arrangements were with Anderson Funeral Home.
