James J. "Jim" Hillen of Warrensburg, Mo., died Wednesday, May 31, 2006.

Jim was born May 18, 1923, in Fairmount, Mo. He attended college at Rockhurst in Kansas City and Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kan., and received military certification in basic engineering. He received his CLU (Certified Life Underwriters) at Rockhurst and graduated in Philadelphia, Pa. Jim had his own insurance company for 15 years, known as Gross Hillen Insurance. He was owner of Hub Realty, which is now known as Hub Professionals. He worked for Mount Olivet Cemetery for 20 years and moved to developed cemeteries in Albany, Schenectady and Waterviliet, N.Y. He used his engineering skills to make lots and gardens and put together a sales crew for each cemetery.

Jim was a veteran. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He was stationed at Camp Carson, Colo., where he and his wife, Rosemary (Betz) Hillen, whom he married in 1942, spent the early years of their marriage. He served in the European and Asiatic Theaters of Operation.

Jim was owner of the Dojo in Fairmount, a school of martial arts. He held many offices in organizations, including Host Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Independence Patriotic Council, Catholic Order of Foresters, Insurance Workers Local 109 and Charter Life Underwriters. Jim was a member of Stephen Counseling Ministry at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, and actively participated in the Men's Club and Bible Study at St. Mark's Catholic Church.

His survivors include his wife, Rosemary; five children, James J. Hillen Jr. of Lenexa, Kan., Kathy Hillen of Independence, Mo., Bill Hillen of Kansas City, Mo., Mike Hillen of Kansas City, Kan., and Pat Hillen of Lee's Summit, Mo.; five grandchildren, Adam, David, Dan, Josh and Sandra Hillen; five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Sidnee, Haylee, Alyssa and Bryce Hillen; and several nieces and nephews.

Jim will be missed by all. He had a full life, and worked to the end with Hub Professionals.

Visitation for Jim will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Independence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Raytown. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Missouri Veterans' Home in Warrensburg. Arrangements are under the direction of Park Lawn Funeral Home, Kansas City, (816) 523-1234.
