Architect. After immigrating to the United States in 1869, he worked for a short time as a draftsman for noted architect-builder Thomas McClelland in Davenport, Iowa. In 1871, he opened his own architecture firm. That firm, known as of 2015 as Scholtz Gowey Gere Marolf, is the oldest Iowa architectural firm in continuous operation. During his career, he designed many buildings in Davenport, Iowa, and the surrounding area, with 30 or more listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Among his most famous designs are Saengerfest Halle, which has played host to national tours of various musical acts, and the J.H.C. Petersen's Sons' Store, the original flagship store of the present-day Von Maur department store chain. He also served for some time as an alderman for the City of Davenport.
